Ben Gravy’s Living the Dream Chasing Winter Surf on the North Shore

Soft-top connoisseur and novelty wave surfer Ben Gravy has been all over the place.

He recently wrapped up his “7 Seas in 7 Days” tour where traveled to Japan, Bali, Australia, Texas, New Jersey, and Norway to surf a different sea in each location.

While he was back home in New Jersey, he scored Thanksgiving surf before getting on a plane to Hawaii just in time for the Vans Pipe Masters where he caddied for Jamie O’Brien.

Gravy dropped his newest vlog above yesterday and captioned it:

“Jamie Obrien CALLED ME OUT After his Pipe Masters Heat. He called me out & told me I was ‘larger than life’ haha. Finals day for the Pipe Masters 2023 & tons of surf on the way to Hawaii & I’m stoked to share the rest of the trip with everyone. For the dream!! – Ben”

It’s so early in the morning it’s still dark when the video begins. Gravy says the report’s calling for four to six-foot surf which he calls “small” for the North Shore.

“It doesn’t matter how many boards to bring to Hawaii, when you open your board bag you always feel like you couldn’t have brought more boards,” Gravy says. “One’s too many, seven’s not enough.”

They go surf and it turns out, it’s “way bigger than it looks.” Gravy and his friend are a bit blown away.

“I can’t believe Jamie was like, ‘This is small.’ If this was New Jersey this would be the swell of the century.”

hat’s the North Shore for you.

Gravy asks how to describe it in one word.

They’ve got it: “Heavy.”
